Meet the Artist: Christoph Pöggeler

Romantic-realistic surrealism on individual found objects

Many people know Christoph Pöggeler primarily as the creator of the “Säulenheiligen” sculptures on Düsseldorf’s advertising columns. What many don’t know is that he is above all an outstanding painter whose works are characterized by a very special sensitivity and love for the simple things in life.

Christoph Pöggeler carefully selects his painting surfaces, searching for special finds that tell their own story, speak to him, and have their own unique characteristics. His preferred material is old wood with individual grains and structures. For example, he uses discarded side panels from shipping crates, formwork boards from construction sites, or old table tops. But even the crumpled wrapping paper of a bouquet of flowers, a map, or a stamped envelope inspire him to create his motifs.

You can expect an exhibition of virtuoso images, detached from trends and the spirit of the times. Images that speak of the beauty and vulnerability of our nature and human existence. Pöggeler lovingly follows the lines and grains and the unique history of his found objects, transforming discarded items destined for the scrap heap into works of art full of poetry and power.
