“I paint what I see. The hidden reality.” (Hongku Kwon)
Hongku Kwon’s paintings unfold meditative moments in which the inconspicuous becomes visible: in nature, in urban spaces, in human existence. In Kwon’s paintings, people – often faceless, yet never without a face – long for melancholy and inner balance. These are moments of stillness, characterized by color compositions that blend light and shadow into a visual symphony of contrasts. In his paintings, Hongku Kwon deliberately creates visual contrasts that radiate inner peace. The more intense the light, the more clearly the shadow emerges – both externally and internally.
In his “Raindrops” series, Hongku Kwon devotes himself to the poetry of water: life-giving and destructive, sensual and melancholic. Water touches us – physically and emotionally. In some of his works, raindrops merge with portraits and landscape scenes, deliberately playing with the boundaries of blur, creating an exciting connection between reality and imagination; a dialogue between the visible and the hidden.
