Jeong-Sook Yu’s abstract works are characterized by great clarity, luminous colors, and a minimalist formal language. Precisely defined, evenly saturated color fields are arranged in strong color contrasts, stacked on top of and next to each other, in horizontal and vertical struts, rectangles, squares, and amorphous curves. Her wood reliefs are composed of bright, monochrome painted wooden panels, mounted precisely and with perfect craftsmanship, so that the colors meet at sharp, straight edges, at “hard edges.”
Her penchant for perfection and simultaneous virtuoso mastery of various printmaking techniques are a legacy from her time studying with Professor Eggenschwiler, who was said to possess similar qualities. In her work, she references role models such as Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich. An artistic affinity with Imi Knoebel, a long-time friend of the artist, is also clearly evident.
