In 2007, Kenya’s general elections saw severe unrest, ethnic killings and displacement. More than 2,000 people died and over 600,000 were driven from their homes. Even 15 years later, in the 2022 elections, the memory of this national trauma is still very present.

“Between Hope and Dispair” shows the close connection between then and now. The work shows the fine line between citizens’ demands for change, politicians’ struggle for influence and the danger of historical repetition. People are queuing to cast their votes, behind them you can see newspaper articles from previous parliamentary elections. A feeling of déjà vu arises, fear and uncertainty appear on many faces. Past and present merge.
