Ruri Matsumoto initially studied at the Tokyo University of the Arts and at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Markus Lüpertz and Herbert Brandl, graduating as a master student of Katharina Grosse. Even during her studies, Ruri Matsumoto received various scholarships, art prizes, and nominations, and her work has been represented in international museum exhibitions, fairs, and gallery exhibitions.
The artist’s works are included in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the MARTa Herford Museum, the Akzo Art Foundation, the Miniature Museum Amsterdam, the Staffstiftung Lemgo, and many renowned international private collections.
he artist works according to a strict concept of reduction and apparent deconstruction. Horizontal or vertical bands of paint are carefully applied, with sections of the canvas covered with adhesive tape, which are then removed. This creates the traces, noses, breaks, and fragments typical of Matsumoto’s paintings. In contrast to Gerhard Richter’s well-known line paintings, which result from computer-controlled digital processes, Ruri Matsumato’s works are paintings in oil and acrylic on canvas, deliberately juxtaposing contrasting colors. She draws on Johannes Itten’s theory of the seven color contrasts: she juxtaposes pure colors, uses light-dark contrasts, juxtaposes complementary colors, and sets pastel, muted colors against saturated, bright colors. With the help of adhesive tape, she creates deliberate interruptions so that the colors juxtapose one another in fragmented ways. With precise placement, she creates a panopticon of color that appears random yet captivates with its geometric order.
