Dreams and the subconscious are the source of the surreal works of Korean artist Sojeong Lee, who lives and works in Düsseldorf. In her works, she documents our deep, often unconscious hopes and fears, drawing on her country’s manga culture in her paintings.
In some works, such a frog appears as a sign of metamorphosis and change, a symbol of the freedom that art allows her. In her work “Dream Catcher,” the frog peers boldly and triumphantly out of her breast pocket. Who has caught whom here?
After studying at Pusan National University in South Korea, Sojeong Lee transferred to the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where she completed her studies as a master student under Prof. Thomas Scheibitz. This was followed by a solo exhibition at Galerie Droste and a number of group exhibitions in Germany and South Korea, such as at Bruch & Dallas in Cologne (2019), BBK Düsseldorf (2021), Museum Haus Opherdicke in Holzwickede (2022), Galerie Biesenbach in Cologne (2022), Obey Art Space in Berlin (2023), and KPM Berlin.
