from “Le 34 tavole di Robert Rauschenberg per l ́Inferno di Dante”, edited in 1965 by Edizioni Macorini, Milan, based on the 1958-59 originals from the Museum of Modern Art, New York, “The ninth circle of hell is Cocytus, a large frozen lake. The traitors are trapped in the ice in four concentric rings. “Ring 1 “Caina” contains the traitors to the family, ring 2 “Antenora” the traitors to the fatherland. In both, only the heads of the sinners still protrude from the ice, the traitors to the country a little deeper, so that they can no longer turn their heads.”
