In the 80s and 90s, the theme “Parsifal” dominated Markus Lüpertz’s work; it became the artist’s most extensive and important work cycle. The knight Parsifal from King Arthur’s Round Table was considered the most innocent and pure of the Camelot knights, so he was sent on a quest to find the Holy Grail. For Lüpertz, the Grail is not the cup of Jesus Christ, but generally the goal of all goals – in the case of the artist, the perfect work of art that he strives for all his life.
Parsifal always appears in a different form because each of us is searching for the meaning of life. The lattice of the chain mail is repeated and points to the knight.
