The Woman in Flames is based on a painting from 1937 and includes some of the key symbols in Dali’s work: the woman with drawers, flames and the crutches. The flames symbolize the woman’s irrepressible temperament, but also her vulnerability and innocence. For Dali, the drawers are a symbol of the unconscious. The many crutches support the woman in her graceful movement, but they are actually not needed: When the woman stands up, she no longer needs supports…
