In our “Meet the Artists” series—and perfectly timed for autumn—we introduce two masters of abstract art whose working styles differ vastly, yet who complement each other perfectly through their shared connection to nature.
What makes Sonja Kalb’s art so special is the harmony and power radiating from her works. Her pieces draw direct inspiration from landscape and nature, with the artist consistently focusing on the essentials: colors, their structures, and their gradients.
At times, dynamic abstract rhythms and emotions find their way into colorful compositions; at others, the artist translates impressions from her travels into masterful variations. Many of her works evoke associations with abstract scenes—reminders of places and moments where light, sun, water, plants, sky, and air left a deep impression on us. Through her paintings—often large-scale works—and her keen sense of color relationships, she succeeds in creating a unique atmosphere within her collectors’ spaces.
Based in Düsseldorf, the artist has received numerous accolades, including international honors such as “Best Abstract Artwork” at the Italia Award (21st Century Art/Biennale Chianciano), the “Voices of Tomorrow Art Award,” and the “Woman Art Award” in partnership with UNESCO.
Kurt Grimm’s sculptures, too, share an immediate connection with nature. In his work, it is the combination of iron and stone that creates perfect harmony—especially through the interplay with nature in gardens or parks. Despite the solid, earthbound nature of these materials, the sculptures are characterized by dynamism, elegance, and a surprising lightness.
The warm rust patina of the minimalist, abstract iron forms enters into a living dialogue with air, light, and moisture, bridging the gap between the robust material and the colors of the surrounding environment.
