Biography

Born in Barcelona in 1893, the painter, graphic artist and sculptor Joan Miró is considered one of the main representatives of surrealism and a pioneer of abstract expressionism. Based on Catalan folk art, his early works show influences of Cubism and Fauvism. From the early to mid-1920s, he underwent a fundamental change of style in Paris, influenced by the Dadaism and Surrealism art movements prevailing there, which led him away from representationalism. As a representative of classical modernism with his imaginative pictorial motifs, Miró is one of the most popular artists of the 20th century. His magical symbols of the moon, stars, bird, eye and woman are among the best-known elements of his art.
