Marc Chagall’s happy visions of a desirable world

Marc Chagall is one of the greatest masters of the 20th century, whose work had a lasting influence on the art world. A unique myth teller of incredibly creative power – a painting poet.

The origins of his creations are the religious experiences of his childhood, ancient myths and legends. His preferred creatures are amorous, enchanted and dreamy figures, weightless and removed from reality. The light, open sign language and the delicate floating of the image motifs develop an attractive language of imagination. The viewer is overwhelmed by the harmony of the theme and the poetic beauty of the colors.

Marc Chagall describes his painting as a “happy vision of a desirable world” and sees it as a counter-image to reality. Pablo Picasso also expressed his unconditional admiration for Marc Chagall: “Chagall must have an angel in his head…”.

The illustration of love as the main theme

Lithography played a prominent role in Chagall’s artistic work. It gave him the freedom to express the metaphorical visions of a work with new means.

By depicting the ancient love story of “Daphnis and Chloé”, Chagall also dealt with personal changes in his private life. He married the Russian Vava Brodsky in 1952. On the Greek island of Paros, the new circle of life began that Chagall needed in order to be able to be creative in a protected environment. These events are depicted in “Daphnis and Chloé”. Above everything hovers tangible love, detached from the difficulties of human existence. Chagall worked intensively on this cycle for three years. The cycle, a series of 42 original color lithographs, is a masterpiece of illustration in 20th century art.

In addition to illustrating many books on behalf of the art dealer Vollard, he also created pictures of the Old Testament. Chagall took up this theme again in his late work when designing stained glass windows for various churches.
