An important point of reference for Marienfeld’s objects is the image of the human body and its perception. He plays with the tension and curvature of surfaces and the resulting changing reflection of light. With an unmistakable aesthetic, he creates abstract forms that seem to have a character of their own.
In his bondage works in particular, the artist succeeds in reinterpreting nude art without the directness of an explicit depiction of the body. He creates new, hybrid forms that give the impression of wanting to emerge from between the tightly stretched rope. This juxtaposition offers erotic connotations as well as associations with phenomena in nature.
Winner of numerous art prizes, many of his works can be found in public and private collections. The artist lives and works in Hattingen an der Ruhr.

Stephan Marienfeld (born 1966) was Tony Cragg’s assistant and “right-hand man” for almost 20 years and was thus directly involved in the realization of many well-known works of art. Today, Marienfeld himself is causing a sensation both nationally and internationally with his unmistakable sculptures. His “Dislike” objects, for example, shaped the entrance area of the Palazzo Mora at the 2019 Venice Biennale.
