Ueli Gantner – leading representative of concrete-constructivist art

With his 3-dimensional lamella reliefs, Ueli Gantner is one of the leading contemporary representatives of optical kinetic art. Through simple movement and changes in perspective, the viewer experiences surprising changes in color and form through the alternating coloration, cut and arrangement of the slats. In this way, Ueli Gantner makes space, body, movement and time tangible in his works. Gantner’s works prove that the classic idea of a viewer standing still in front of an artwork has fallen out of time.

Gantner focuses on form; in addition to pure white designs, he works with the three primary colors and their complementary colors. For Ueli Gantner, black always results from the mixture of primary red, yellow and blue – according to Gantner – “there is nothing more colorful than black“.
Ueli Gantner’s works are thus firmly embedded in concrete-constructive art; with a minimum of pictorial means, he strives for a maximum of expression. His study of the American sculptor Richard Serra, for example, led Gantner to a geometric torus shape that can be discovered in many of his reliefs.

Ueli Gantner is a researcher who uses light and structures in his reliefs to make forms perceptible that generally remain hidden. His art enables us to experience more. He tirelessly strives for the “unseen”, that is, for what our eyes perceive but our brains cannot normally process and therefore filter out. From the relationship between the visible and the conceivable. The rhythmic interplay of colors and forms results in dematerialized pictorial worlds that make the incomprehensible, the absent, recognizable and perceptible.

Ueli Gantner’s works have been presented at many international exhibitions and are collected internationally.
