Waed Alhajj

*1992 in Salamyia, Syria

Waed Alhajj’s sculptures show portraits of people and situations, which he reveals partly humorously and partly sarcastically. The mass of clay becomes the mass of people: no idealized bodies, but symbols of joy, suffering and love.

In the 2022 animated film “Fluchtweg” and its award-winning sequel “Fluchtweg 2”, the artist recalls his emigration to Germany and “the path that one did not choose”. The film “Fluchtweg 2” consists of a total of 2046 photos of clay reliefs created especially for this purpose and repeatedly changed. “The war is terrible. What remains from all this devastation are only the memories, the love and the dreams that you pack in a small bag…”.
