from “Le 34 tavole di Robert Rauschenberg per l ́Inferno di Dante”, edited in 1965 by Edizioni Macorini, Milan, based on the 1958-59 originals from the Museum of Modern Art, New York, “In the last bolgia of the eighth circle of hell there are various kinds of forgers. The alchemists, as alterers of things, stand in a dense line to be burned at the stake – a fate that befell many alchemists in the Middle Ages. As a contemporary reference, Rauschenberg shows a green figure striving for change but being thwarted by the red and yellow traffic lights to the right.”
