from “Le 34 tavole di Robert Rauschenberg per l ́Inferno di Dante”, edited in 1965 by Edizioni Macorini, Milan, based on the 1958-59 originals from the Museum of Modern Art, New York, “The devil (with trident) also judges those who have received and bought absolution from the church for their sins in advance (symbolized by the white cross on the left). For absolution requires honest repentance. Rauschenberg transfers this to politics, the military, the church and society: no one can escape their responsibility.”
