Playing with space in minimalist (wall) sculptures
The Dutch sculptor Simon Oud (*1956 in Hoorn, Netherlands) is known for his minimalist yet aesthetic three-dimensional wall and floor sculptures, which enter into a dialogue with the space with their volume, surfaces and lines.
A deep connection to nature as a source of inspirationSimon Oud grew up in the polder landscape of West Friesland, and this landscape serves as his greatest inspiration. He feels deeply connected to this terrain with its scattered barns and stables and translates the landscape architecture into his subtle sculptures in an abstractly reduced manner.
Oud explores the boundaries between space and form, giving great importance to lines and surfaces. His lines seem to emerge from infinity and disappear into infinity again; the edges of the sculptures extend far beyond the object into the wall of the room.
Elegant play of light in matt zinc gray
Simon Oud prefers to work with zinc because of its good malleability and the special matt silver-grey surface, which he also treats with a fine layer of patina to create subtle shading.
In this way, he elegantly captures the light of the room in the curves and surfaces of his works and, on the other hand, creates an expansive tension through the slightly curved surfaces.
