For more than a decade, Bernd accompanied us on our journey and played a decisive role in shaping the program at Galerie Kellermann. Over the years, our collaboration evolved into something far greater than a typical relationship between an artist and a gallery. Bernd loved life and his “artpark”—he was curious, full of energy, and always in motion. No sooner had one project been completed than new ideas began to take shape. With great dynamism, he continuously developed new series of works, leaving behind a distinct body of art of exceptional quality—the kind worthy of a museum collection.
On June 2nd, Bernd Caspar Dietrich passed away following a brief, serious illness.
For the exhibition Bernd C. Dietrich and the New ZERO, we have curated a special selection of his remaining available works. We are presenting them in dialogue with fellow travelers and artists whose own work shares common ground with his exploration of light, structure, material, movement, and surface. Bernd C. Dietrich’s pieces are placed in conversation with works by contemporary “New ZERO” artists—Sascha Nordmeyer, Reiner Seliger, and Robbert de Goede—as well as works by the original ZERO artists: Günther Uecker, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, and Adolf Luther.
This type of juxtaposition was something Bernd C. Dietrich sought out and cherished during his lifetime. It reveals just how vibrant the questions first posed by the ZERO movement remain today: questions concerning light and space, the use of new materials, the transcendence of the traditional “picture,” and the creation of art that shifts according to the viewer’s perception and perspective—along with the fundamental need to reset time to zero and seek a new beginning.
Together with his wife, Hella Sinnhuber, we wish to look back on Bernd’s artistic path, share personal memories, and, above all, place his art — once again — at the center of our focus. Above all, however, we would like to dedicate this evening to Bernd C. Dietrich the person: to his zest for life, his energy, his friendship and the enthusiasm with which he always shared his new ideas with us.
We look forward to your visit.
